Berry Lanterns, Orange Berries Against Dark

Botanical & Flowers · horizontal

A drooping cluster of small round orange and yellow berries hangs from thin pinkish stems, with a few red-tinged berries mixed in. Green feathery leaves arch across the top of the frame. The background is dark, soft and blurred, with a fine mottled, painterly texture. The berries stand out as the brightest, warmest part of the image.

A collector wants this piece for the way a small cluster of orange and golden berries glows like lit embers against a deep brown-black ground. The light is soft and low-key, and the painterly, canvas-like texture gives the photograph the quiet weight of an old-master still life. Most berry or autumn-leaf photographs are bright and busy. This one is hushed, warm and dark.
