The Quiet Weight of Clouds, Snowy Mountain Valley

Pacific Northwest Landscapes · horizontal

A snow-covered mountain range rises behind a wide white valley, with thick clouds piled above the peaks and catching warm cream light. In the lower left, a wooden building with a brown metal roof and red-brown walls sits in the snow. Bare brush and a small evergreen stand in the lower right foreground, and dark stands of conifers dot the valley and foothills. The surface has a painterly texture, with cool blue shadows against warm, pale highlights.

A collector wants this piece for its glowing, cream-and-peach cloud bank pressing down on cool blue, snow-covered peaks. Most snowy mountain scenes are plain white and gray. Here the warm sky and cool slopes set up a real temperature contrast. A small red-brown building in the lower left gives the vast, quiet scene a human scale and a single warm anchor. The soft, painterly finish makes it read as a calm, atmospheric landscape rather than a literal record.
