Where Trees, Sky and Water All Curl Into Brush-Like Swirls

Budding Bend is a vertical river landscape in which a calm, readable scene is carried by a swirling, painterly surface.

Start at the bottom edge, where a line of crisp, pale stones begins. Follow it toward the water. The river is blue-green and bends gently away from you, and your eye slides diagonally into the distance until it reaches a small blue mountain at the horizon.

Now look at the surface. The trees, the sky and the water have all turned into curls and ripples, like brushwork. The scene is easy to read, but nothing in it sits flat. That is why I made this piece, Budding Bend, and why I think it rewards a second look.

What the eye finds when it stays a while

I have no story to invent for this river, and I would rather not make one up. What I can tell you is what is in the picture. Tall, thin trees lean across the foreground, some bare and some just showing small new leaves. Dry brown grasses and rounded grey and cream stones fill the bank. A dense row of yellow-green trees lines the far side.

Then the colour settles in. Warm browns and olives on the bank answer the cool blue and teal of the water and sky. The light is soft and even, so nothing competes. The open water and budding branches give it an early-spring stillness.

Most river landscapes are either plain realism or loose abstraction. This one sits between the two. You can read the scene at once, and the finish stays lively and rhythmic. The pale stones stay crisp against all that movement, so they hold the eye and lead it to the river.

What you will see in this piece

Where it belongs

The tall vertical format suits a narrow wall, a hallway, the space beside a doorway or the area above a console. The tall trunks and dense texture give it presence, and the detail rewards a closer look as you walk past.

The earthy palette sits easily with natural wood, neutral walls and soft blue accents. The light in the picture is gentle and even, so it brings a calm, open feeling to a room.
